Thinking of Mutual Funds? Think again.

By Jordan J. Weir

For many years, investors have attempted to diversify their overall portfolios by trying to pick stocks across a diverse set of asset classes. Which is all well and good, but the problem it generally runs into is you should also be diversified within any given asset class, lest something adverse happen to the company you happened to bet on. Yet as soon as your diversifying both within, and between asset classes, now your running a portfolio of potentially 40+ equities, and even the active investor rarely has time to do due diligence on the hundreds of companies required to find 40 excellent investments.

The answer lies in a little tool known as the ETF. ETF stands for Exchange Traded fund. Think of it as a mutual fund that isn't actively managed, focuses on a certain area, and can be traded like a stock without incurring extra penalties. Each ETF holds a number of companies, similar to a mutual fund, and its listed price is simply the overall value of the companies it holds.

ETFs can focus on certain regions; China for instance, is represented by the FXI. ETFs can focus on certain sectors; Those playing financial stocks may find XLF interesting. It can even focus on certain capitalizations; Those wanting diversification across small cap companies can make a single investment in IWM.

But why shun the mutual fund? Why take the new guy over the established king? Lets start with the tax advantage. When mutual funds endure large sell offs, they have to liquidate many positions, some of which are currently at a gain. They then have to pay capital gains on those positions, and this negatively impacts their return. It would be an understatement to say that Mutual funds generally have higher expense ratios in general compared to ETFs. It can sometimes cost as little as 8 dollars to get into an ETF whereas a mutual fund of 20,000 that grows to 60,000 over a 20 year period may have conservatively lost as much as 18,000 to its competent managers.

Perhaps the biggest consideration is the simple convenience of owning ETFs when compared to mutual funds. They can be bought and sold (or shorted) any time during the trading day, using the same order types available to normal stocks. Free from redemption fees, the only deterrent from actively trading an ETF is belief in the efficient market hypothesis, and the standard commission costs from buying and selling stocks

Another important consideration is that most of the more liquid ETFs are optionable. This means that option-savvy investors can harness the power of stock options to change the risk-reward profile of their positions, and risk-conscious investors can use stratagems such as the covered call and protective put to protect their investment.

One thing to note is that not all ETFs are created equal. While some simply hold a basket of stocks and use those to keep the ETFs value near the benchmark, many use other, more exotic strategies, with various degrees of success. QLD for instance, aims to gain roughly twice the daily returns of the Nasdaq composite index, and is usually fairly consistent when doing this. Another similar instrument is the ETN, which is actually a debt based instrument. While ETNs also aims to gain returns based on a given benchmark, there price is also sensitive to changes in the debt rating of the issuer, and this should be considered when investing in them.

The only reason not to use ETFs is a lack of understanding, for they really are one of the most revolutionary investment tools of the 21st century. Their ability to reduce risk through diversification across an asset class, while still effectively giving an investor exposure to an entire sector, should be taken advantage of by everybody, for both long and short plays. ETFs are an invaluable asset for everyone invested in any stock market, and their advantages should be used to the fullest. - 23217

Is Investing really Just Gambling?

By Carter B. Banes

By gambling you are taking a big chance that you might either win a lot of money, or you might lose a lot of money. You are playing a game and you don't know what's going to happen.

Some people play with investing like a game. When you invest your money, you believe that the company you invest in will be successful and the investment will increase in value. Some people who look at investing as a game want to make money, but they also enjoy themselves. Others just do it to make money. Why don't the others look at it as a game?

Investing is not a gamble. Some types of investments are so obviously not like gambling. For example, you may decide to put some money into government bonds. You are guaranteed the money back plus interest. It can't be a gamble if you know you're going to get money back. There is the smallest chance you won't get your money back, but that would have to be because the government is in a lot of trouble, and I think you'd have more to worry about than getting your money back.

When it comes to stocks, investing is still very different from gambling. When you buy a stock, you buy a piece of the company. You own part owner of that company. You are invested in that company which means when they make money, you could get dividends, or when they are doing well, the price of the stock will go up.

When you put money down on a football game or when you give your cash to a casino, you own nothing. Your earning power does not depend on the success of anything or anyone. It depends simply on chance.

You can use investing as another source of income. By investing, your money is working to earn money just as you do at your job. If you ever inherit or win a lot of money, never gamble it. Invest it in a low risk, stable investment and that money can grow exponentially over time.

For example, we'll say you inherit $10,000 for an Aunt. You could either choose to gamble it for double or nothing to $20,000 and then double it again for $40,000, etc. Sure, you could double it 10 times over, but the chances of you even doubling it the first time are very slim. You can pretty much assume you will not be able to double it ten times over. In you invested invested it into stocks and earned an average of 8% a year for 30 years, you would have over $100,000. Lose it all or multiply it by ten? - 23217

Forex Strategies - How to Make Money in a Recession

By James Smith

There are so many forex strategies out there in the market today, it is very hard for a novice forex trader to pick one which he knows will be profitable without losing a large sum of money making expensive mistakes. A good tip for a forex trader looking for a winning solution is to use multiple forex strategies - this way he is able to diversify his risk, and then see them in action before having to choose which one he will trade with on a full time basis.

Whatever forex strategies a forex trader employs will depend on his personal preferences. Some strategies may work for one but won't for the other. This is because every forex trader wants to realize profits in their own way and in their own pace. Using these forex strategies will surely help the investor make his choice in what stocks to buy and when to buy them.

The most important aspect that a foreign currency dealer needs to be aware of is that the foreign exchange market does not have any centralized exchange for dealing, which means that pertinent information needed by foreign currency dealers, such as volume, and details of buyers and sellers, will not be available to them. They have to rely on more detailed and specific analysis, and develop profitable forex strategies to get them through the reams of information in order to be able to make profitable trades.

Interbank foreign currency dealers, however, have the advantage of seeing the order book, which means that they know when their clients are going to place big trades, and at what price. This is why retail foreign currency dealers have to move faster, and develop robust forex strategies if they want to be ahead of interbank foreign currency dealers, as they have a huge advantage over the average retail investor.

No matter how good the forex strategies are that the foreign currency dealer has chosen, it is still absolutely vital to have an effective method of dealing. I was always blaming the forex strategies for my losses when I first started out as a foreign currency dealer but when I look back on it the problem was that I was not being consistent with my dealing, and not using good risk management techniques.

It requires a lot of discipline foreign exchange professional to be able to stick to their forex strategies and trade without emotions such as fear, greed and stupidity entering their currency trading decisions. When you bring the natural human emotion along to your trading it changes the focus of your currency trading system and can often change the result, from being a profitable trader to a losing one. If your emotions aren't right for trading it usually alters your trading in a bad way and often turns a winning trading strategy into a losing one.

There is another opportunity which presents itself for forex traders with currency trading, and that is the market is working 24 hours a day, and never stops to sleep. While this is an advantage in some ways it can also be a big disadvantage. The disadvantage for a foreign exchange professional is you cannot watch the market 24 hours a day. You can't be there to catch all your trade signals. One concludes from this that various forex strategies are impossible to track, if you are sleeping when the strategy tells you to pull the trade trigger, you will miss money making opportunities.

Finally, it should be noted that currency trading is not for everyone, as a lot of forex strategies can be hard to follow. I don't know about you but I don't want to spend my life watching charts and I decided a while back that being a foreign exchange professional is really not for most people. One solution is to identify forex strategies which use automated software programs which will monitor the action for you 24 hours a day and do the currency trading for you automatically. Using such a system they will enter and exit your trades when the market gives them the signals. For the working foreign exchange professional looking for profitable forex strategies, this is often the ideal currency solution, allowing a working person to profit from forex whilst he is at work. - 23217

Make More Money Online Trading Forex Using Fibonacci Formula!

By Richard U. Olson

Leonardo of Pisa, better known to us today as Fibonacci first introduced what we call the Fibonacci sequence to the west in his 1202 book Liber Abaci (the sequence was already known in Indian mathematics). He stumbled upon this sequence while attempting to estimate how many rabbits he would be able to breed in one year based on his knowledge of their breeding habits. This mathematical model is used by Forex traders today.

So you see, what many people mistakenly take as a mere mathematical abstraction, just "fooling around" with numbers, is rooted in very real-world applied mathematics. To state things very basically, the Fibonacci sequence can be used to detect and describe otherwise hidden patterns in the world around us.

It works really well while investing. Why? Well, based on the mass behavior of investors there are various hidden patterns in the stock market. Perceptive investors know this. Investment aphorisms such as "The best time to buy is when there's blood in the streets" and "Buy low and sell high" work well. However, they also relate to understanding the investment markets hidden patterns.

The reason that investment market patterns are so well hidden is because "up close" they cannot be seen. Day to day, hour to hour fluctuations in the investment markets cannot be predicted with any accuracy. But certain overall trends that extend over longer periods of time definitely can be. And savvy investors, including Forex traders, have successfully been using Fibonacci's number sequence to take advantage and make big profits.

The Fibonacci sequence is a string of numbers with each number being the sum of the two numbers which preceded it. For example, one such string would be 1,1,2,3,5,8,13,21 and so on. These numbers are related in several ways. Any given number in a Fibonacci sequence is about 1.618 of its predecessor - the "golden ratio" of the Greek mathematicians.

Of all the Fibonacci series the two applications in wide spread use by Forex traders and investors are arcs and retracements.

A Fibonacci chart is made of three curved lines which represent support levels, key resistance and ranging. A trendline is first drawn between two points (generally the high and low points over a given period of time). Three curved lines are then drawn which intersect the trendline at the 38.2%, 50% and 61.8% points. Decisions about buying and selling are made at these points (i.e. - when the price of the commodity in question reaches these points).

Next is the retracement - this is when the movement of a stock or other traded commodity reverses direction; this is a reversal which is stronger than the prevailing trend of the stock's movement. Retracement patterns are looked at closely by investors; a Fibonacci retracement can be used to analyze the odds of a commodity's price having a larger than average retracement before continuing back on the direction it had before reversal. The trendline is typically drawn between two extremes and is divided vertically by the Fibonacci ratios of 23.6%, 38.2%, 50%, 61.8% and 100%.

The Fibonacci retracement is widely used by sophisticated traders to find: strategic places for transactions to be placed; target prices; and stop-losses. Other technical tools including Tirone levels, Gartley patterns, and Elliott Wave theory all make use of retracement.

The Fibonacci formula simply works and is useful while investing. Forex traders worldwide are finding it successful while using it. - 23217
